not a lot of room for vanity

Yesterday the boys and I were driving to the Mount to drop something off for Nick. It was our big venture for the day. As we were driving, Lute was telling me how much he was looking forward to going to "Daddy's work".

"Well, we're not going in today, we're just gonna drop something off. Daddy's going to run outside and get it," I explained.

"But I want to go in."

I didn't really know how to explain that one of the main reasons we weren't going in (besides me not wanting to lug the double stroller out of the car and strap George to my chest), was because I was wearing dumpy sweat pants and didn't want to fit into the "oh she has three kids and is too busy to look presentable" stereotype.

But when you have an almost-three year old that thinks he is eight, you will be hit with a barrage of "Why, Mama?"s until you fess up.

"Yeah, but we're not going in today," I replied.

"Why, Mama?" (See, I told you.)

"Well... because I am wearing sweat pants and if we were going in I would want to wear cute pants."

"You can wear sweat pants if you want to. Why do you want to wear puke pants?"

"No, Lute, cute pants, not puke pants."

"Oh." Silence. "Can we pleeeeeease go in?"

I have a feeling that whether he is three, thirteen, or thirty, this will never make sense to him. In a house full of boys, I don't suppose it matters if I wear my cute pants. And truthfully, with two babies, my cute pants are usually puke pants anyway. Oh well.
